Re: Liz's Lens ExcerptBy: JoannaDate: 4/19/03 1:05 AM I too am a white, female, middle class individual and these traits never occured to me as advantageous or defining either. Perhaps it's because this was the norm for us, and we were always surrounded by people like us, that we never gave any thought to it. People usually do not pay attention to things they take for granted or things that they are used to. In both of our lives, there was probably never a reason for these things to be pointed out to us or for our parents to draw attention to these traits. Or, maybe you're parents didn't draw attention to your traits because they did not want to distinguish you from others because they wanted to teach you to treat everyone equally. Maybe they were modeling the behavior they expected from you. I am curious about how life taught you that everyone was not equal - if there are significant events that took place in your life that got you to realize this. I would be interested to know how these lenses have effected your literature world because we have very similar lenses. No responses
