Rachel, I can relate to your diverse high school experience quite a bit. Living in a suburb of Richmond, I went to school with both city and rural kids as well. It was something I took for granted and never really thought much about until I got to college and spoke with kids who may have only had 5 Black kids in their entire school. It shocked me and made me realize how much my exposure to differences in general has affected the way in which I view the world. Sometimes I think a lot of racial and ethnic tension is just simply lack of knowledge or experience with events or people that are different from us. I'm glad you feel going to a diverse high school was a positive experience as well.
